SEDIMENT GARDENS

Temporary Installation, Don River, Toronto

Temporary sculptural installation sited in the Lower Don Valley. Installed as part of the City of Toronto's Ecolage Environmental Public Art Project which explored the relationship of our city to the natural features of the Don River watershed.

Sediment Gardens were constructed with steel, filter mediums and plant materials and were created to highlight the relationship between the flows of traffic on the overhead expressway, salt, rainwater and the recovering Don River below.

Sediment Gardens ask the following questions and, through their construction, suggest some possibilities:

1. What are the relationships between stormwater, groundwater, riverwater, lakewater?

2. How do the City and the River participate in this 'narrative of hydrology'?

3. Can surface run-off water be used to support plant material?
